September 2014 marked another milestone for Jersey 2 Africa 4 Football Foundation, as they sent two boxes weighing almost 1,000 kilos on their journey from Jersey to Nairobi.
The boxes were filled with donations of second-hand football equipment, including team and individual kits, tracksuits, training tops, shorts, socks and footballs.
Thanks to the support of the shop staff and volunteers, the boxes were ready to be shipped out. Gill Bell and her daughter Bethany accompanied the boxes on their journey, navigating through four airports and the final hurdle of customs at Nairobi Airport. Their arrival was warmly greeted by the Chief of the Mukuru slum district, who was presented with a canvas print of Jersey's own Chief, HE Lieutenant Governor.
The journey didn't end there. Patrick Otieno led the way to the Embakasi School field, where the J2A team was welcomed by the headmistress Nancy Mutai, who had kindly offered the use of the school playing field and classrooms for the duration of their visit.
The coaching sessions got underway, with boys age groups from U8s to U17s, plus U15girls, all receiving coaching. The team also completed their first coaching clinic for local coaches. Despite the occasional distraction, all the sessions were successful, with much-improved organisation and planning by the local coaches. All the players were enthusiastic, attentive and keen to learn and improve.
The journey was a success, and it showed that Jersey 2 Africa 4 Football makes a significant impact on the lives of young football players in Africa. By providing better equipment, coaching, and opportunities for learning, the foundation is helping to inspire, create joy, share love, give hope and help dreams to come true. The foundation is committed to improving young lives in Africa, both on and off the field.
